The 3 Best Brands to Look at when Buying a Stockpot
With all the stockpot recipes in American cooking it's imporant to find a quality stockpot that will withstand the test of time. Out of all the stockpot uses we were particularly interested in how well the stock pot cools down our five bean salad recipe during the mixing process in addition to how it performs while doing normal cooking.
We rejected some highly-rated brands because they didn’t meet our criteria:
- When reviewing ratings that users give their products it’s important that there is a large number of reviews to ensure that here is a predictable amount of both positive and negative experiences and opinions to give a realistic assessment of the product’s overall utility. So we excluded all brands that had less than 100 reviews.
- When we look at the distribution of 1 to 5 star ratings we find that in the review of a trusted product that the distribution of the amount of rating negativity tapers on a generally consistent and predictable manner. This means that with a great brand the 5 star ratings would be the vast majority of reviews with 4 star reviews being considerably less common. Then 3 star reviews would be lesser still and the 1 star reviews would usually be the least number of reviews across a trusted product offerings.
- Upon examining a large number popular highly-rated brands we found three brands which fit our criteria. Only one was copper-clad but should work good enough for the bean salad recipe that you can find HERE. We had hopes for the Ciwete® brand which does has copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. We can't recommend it now because of the high number of negative issues that have been reported but we'll keep an eye on it. We also looked at the Legend® 5-ply with the middle copper core. There were an unusual amount of negatives with much complaining about how food sticks hard or burns on too easily. Now it's possible that every one of the complaints could be from people who are use to the no-stick cookware. That's something that we'll keep an eye on for now.
Because of our decades of experience with the third brand, Revere Ware, we ignored the star ratings completely. We’ll get into that shortly.
We Recommend Amazon Basics, Revere Ware and Made In Cookware Stockpots
In many of the brands people found issues with the steel itself that the stockpots were made of. The complaints generally centered around different type of degradation over a relatively short period of time or with some unknown taste leeching out into the food from the steel itself. These brands appeared to be free of these types of issues.
The copper bottom Revere Ware stockpots and other cookware are no longer being manufactured and yet are legendary among cooks who are in the know. Copper is one of the most efficient conductors of heat of all metals. If you go to our BEAN SALAD recipe page you see a detailed explanation of how this works in copper bottom cookware. We at Salsa Stop have used various Revere Ware pots and pans incessantly for several decades now with excellent results. With that said the Revere Ware we use was probably made in the 1980's or 1990's. Yet it turns out that the best Revere Ware was made in 1968 and before! We recommend finding well-taken-care-of used versions of the Revere Ware Stock Pot on the Amazon links below. The star ratings on these are essentially meaningless on the product itself and relate more to the actual seller or to the condition of the item received. Be sure to get the versions that were made in Clinton Illinois.
